THE RAY GUNS OF BUCK ROGERS

The first toy ray gun produced was a Buck Rogers toy, as have been many of the most beautiful and notable ray guns made since. This exhibition recounts the history of Buck's popularity and surveys the toy ray guns which have been associated with this famous space hero.

THE RAY GUNS OF 1950S SPACE OPERA

Although the Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon comic strips and radio shows of the 1930s and 1940s first created the market for space adventure, the development of television in the 1950s added a new dimension to this popular preoccupation. Called "Space Opera," early space TV series like Captain Video, Space Patrol, and Tom Corbett were phenomenonally popular and spawned numerous toys and premiums. Among the most popular of these were ray guns. At least twelve toy space guns were sold in association with television space adventure shows during this period. These guns are the focus of this exhibition.
